Start them young: combatting the talent gap by reaching the younger generation

Ago 27, 2024

The talent gap in mining is a real issue facing the industry and it is one which we have come across time and time again.
There are a few arguments surrounding the issue. The first concerns salaries for university leavers. According to The Geological Society, starting salaries for geoscientists are between £28,000-£35,000. Geochemists can earn between £20,000-£30,000 a year.

Geophysicists can earn between £28,000-£35,000.

The average debt facing UK graduates, once they leave university, is £45,600, according to analysis by the UK Government.

Despite this, recent graduates who are now working in the field, extol the virtues of a geosciences degree. One recent graduate, Ed Newitt, now works for Chalice Mining in
Australia after graduating from Cambourne School of Mines in 2022.

Ed said «If you want to pursue a similar career to mine, my advice would be to take the
plunge,» he said.

«It’s a fascinating field where science meets practicality. Find something you’re interested
in and do wider reading on it, find who else works in those fields and reach out to them,»
he added.
